Women's Health & Maternity Care in Shenzhen: A Guide for Hong Kong Residents
深圳市婦幼保健院 (Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health Hospital) is the institution most often searched by Hong Kong residents looking into women's health and maternity care across the border in Shenzhen. This page sets out what is actually true about it — its real grade, departments and campuses — clarifies a common point of confusion with a separate, similarly-named district hospital, and states plainly what could and could not be verified. It is informational only: not a referral service, and not a claim that ok.med can arrange treatment for you.
Is 深圳市婦幼保健院 a real hospital, and what does it offer?
深圳市婦幼保健院 (Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health Hospital, SZMCH) is a real, currently-operating public hospital, founded in 1979 and merged with the former Shenzhen Women and Children's Hospital in 2002. Its own English-language page describes it as "one of the well-known Grade-III Class-A maternal and child hospitals in China" and names it as the Women and Children's Medical Center of Southern Medical University.

SZMCH's own site lists Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Neonatology, Paediatrics, a Reproductive Medicine Center, and Traditional Chinese Medicine among more than 30 clinical departments, run across two campuses — both in Futian District: Hongli campus (No. 2004 Hongli Road) and Fuqiang campus (No. 3012 Fuqiang Road). An English-language version of its website exists, but it does not describe any dedicated international-patient or Hong Kong-facing service — only the general department listing translated into English.

Is 福田婦幼保健院 the same hospital?
深圳市福田區婦幼保健院 (Shenzhen Futian District Maternal and Child Health Hospital) is a separate, real, currently-operating institution — not the same hospital as SZMCH, despite the similar name and both being located in Futian District. Its own site states it was established in 1984, is ranked among China's "top 100" maternal and child health hospitals nationally, and lists 21 departments including obstetrics, gynaecology, women's health and paediatrics.

Does a Hong Kong healthcare voucher work there?
Neither SZMCH nor Shenzhen Futian District Maternal and Child Health Hospital is a designated institution under the Elderly Health Care Voucher Scheme's Greater Bay Area Pilot Scheme, per the scheme's own current institution list. Unlike HKU-Shenzhen Hospital or 愛康健 (CKJ), a Hong Kong government healthcare voucher does not currently apply at either hospital named on this page.

Why do some Hong Kong residents consider mainland care at all?
A 2025 peer-reviewed study in Public Administration and Policy: An Asia-Pacific Journal found that Hong Kong's high costs, long waiting times, and gaps in public health, dental and long-term care services are among the factors pushing some residents to seek more affordable, accessible care in the Greater Bay Area.

That finding is about cross-border healthcare in general — cost, waiting times and service gaps — not a maternity- or gynaecology-specific trend. No citable source discussing a maternity-specific cross-border pattern was found this session, so this page does not claim one.
That does not mean Shenzhen is a straightforward substitute for every reader: as covered below, a Hong Kong healthcare voucher does not currently apply at either hospital on this page. Check the voucher question below →
What should I check before going?
Vetting a specific mainland provider, and other safety questions, are covered in ok.med's Greater Bay Area healthcare provider safety guide, not repeated here.
